Why I Love My Dad

When my parents visit certain things invariably occur: every single piece of laundry gets ironed (jeans, pajamas, and handkerchiefs even!); the dog gets walked dozens upon dozens of times a day; and stuff gets broken, set on fire, or flooded. We also have a whopping good time!

My dad, though, never fails to crack me up. Last time he visited, it was his theory about how aliens are hollowing out meteors and using them as space ships to fly by and observe our planet. Made sense to me!

This time it was something a little closer to home. On one of our walks he pointed out these faintly green stones that people everywhere use for fences.

It's kinda difficult to notice, but they are tinged slightly green.

The conversation went something like this:

Dad: "That green rock is everywhere. You know what we need?"

Me: "What's that?"

Dad: "We need some photographic paper. Some film."

Me: "And why is that?"

Dad:"Because they're green and I think I know what they are."

Me: "And that would be?"

Dad: "If we take a scraping and it leaves an image on the paper, it's uranium."

Me: "So you think that all these fences are made from uranium?"

Dad: "You never know!"

And then he goes on to talk in depth about uranium 235 and half-lifes and fissile isotopes. It was all quite fascinating actually.

Two weeks are gone and we drove them back to Narita Airport last Saturday. Sure is quiet around here.

And here are dad, mom, and Julyan.

And dad trying to pull an Ozzy with his little bird friend.

This is sweet, Kappa! My father would have had a blast with yours, bless him. He loved to talk science and conspiracy theories. I used to cringe in embarrassment as he studied those sensationalist newspapers at the supermarket cashier as we waited for them to ring up our purchases. Fortunately, he was usually too cheap to buy one.

Do you think your parents would enjoy a holiday in Scotland? I could use having things ironed here, though the flooding and fires might be a problem...

I have a hunch your Dad and I would get along just fine.

Ironing's okay but no starch in the underwear please. ;)

Mary, oh, mom's iron is hot and ready to go! Dad will be hunting for Nessie.

Frank, I have that feeling as well. She does iron boxers. And I have seen her carrying around a spray bottle of something...

Katrina, Yay for the marimokkori!! I am so proud of you. I bet it was hard to choose. I've never seen the panda ones. Gonna go check your blog now to see if you got a picture up. Ha ha.

Katarina, I also wanted to ask more about your Japan trip--where you went and for how long. But I'm hoping that will be in the post.

Hilary, he's a hoot. I love how he loves to study. All the time. And how he gets so excited when he figures something out.

If your dad makes you laugh, it's a good thing.

Long time no see. Momo got a job with the government that starts late next month, so we're actually going to buy a house in Northern Virginia in early summer. Our first house!
The green stone is igneous rock containing olivine. That's what makes it green. There's a beach on the southwest coast of the Big Island in Hawaii that's made of this stuff and it's a really green beach. There actually might be uranium in those rocks, but it's not likely to be the yellow or green uranium oxide ores.
Later,
imomomo

Ello, I just looked at plane tickets for July and nearly fainted. They've never been so expensive! *Sniff*Sniff* I'm in the there's-gotta-be-a-way!! stage right now.

And thank you imomo about the rock information. Congratulations on the house. I cannot wait to hear about the house, and see pictures! You guys must be very excited. Wee!

Really liked your blog. I have a friend who studies Japanese and has a class once a month at the Red Cross teaching Japanese. I'll have to tell her about your blog.

Tell your mama I'll be back in the midsouth in about ten days so if she wants me to wave at Mississippi give me a holler.

And wow, I've so totally been missing this. I can't wait until things are settled and I can bug you all the time again.

Hey girl! You two have a safe trip now. I'm missing you both.

Actually, mom and dad are in Omaha now. And then my grandmother decided to join them. So she just recently moved from Greenville. I just have an aunt and uncle and some cousins sprinkled about Arkansas and Texas now.

And isn't he though? Just started junior high last week and taller than me!
