Jim, you crack me up. Ironically enough, if someone had been living there that would have been a possibility. I can't tell you how many fires here I've seen (or heard about) started by incense/candles on family altars.
I haven't heard any other news about it. I need to see if they caught anyone. I am convinced that they should have cameras on everything valuable. I mean so many priceless Buddhist statues have been stolen recently.

I never realized there was an actual house the movie was based on. Where is it? For some reason, I always figured it must be in Chiba, somewhere along the Boso Peninsula.
From the photo, it looks as though there is still something left to rebuild. Is there, I wonder?
Mary, I'll see if I can dig up any news articles as to what happened. They reported it then promptly stopped. As I recall the house was in Tokyo (!) Suginami-ku, so sort of the outskirts. My husband said they were actually renting it out for a long time. Recently it was uninhabitated.
now that's just sad. My kids love that movie - although I think it is very strange. Oh well, that crazy person in Korea burned down a national landmark so people are just horrid sometimes.

I am slightly fascinated by fire - ok, it hypnotizes me...but I don't understand arson. How sad!!!

I can't say that I know all that much about Anime, but fires are such sad events.. even more so when it's arson.
