And the Answer is...

That squishy looking stuff in the yellow bowl!

It is odd. I can't even get my Japanese friends to come to an agreement on exactly what shirako is. I've heard everything from ovaries to testicles to sperm. In dictionaries I find it is translated as milt. I looked up milt. Milt means spleen or...sperm containing fluid of a male fish. Seminal fluid. No matter. We've learned enough for today.

Okay..so it was larger than I was expecting a portion to be. How would you like that job?

Musta been a huge hunkin' fish. I wonder how much a fish de-spermer gets paid an hour? *wink*wink*

Actually I just saw a recipe for this great-looking (Japanese) cream stew but shirako was one of the main ingredients so gave it a definite pass!

I suppose it isn't any stranger than eating sea urchin roe and definitely not as icky as eating kidneys, knowing their biological function. Give me good old-fashioned muscle to eat!
